The UNWTO’s Tourism for Rural Development Programme recently organized a workshop, titled “Reimagine Rural,” at the UN Youth Cafe in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Held at the UNWTO premises, the event brought together over 70 young minds to explore innovative ways of advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through tourism in a Saudi-inspired countryside.
During the workshop, participants engaged in reimagining rural landscapes within Saudi Arabia, envisioning tourism as a vital economic activity in hypothetical villages. The focus was on proposing ideas that align with specific SDGs. The results were both imaginative and impactful, emphasizing the integration of tourism with rural lifestyles, the promotion of cultural heritage, and the enhancement of digital infrastructure.
The event provided a platform for young individuals to contribute creative solutions that underscore the potential of tourism in fostering sustainable development in rural areas. The proposals demonstrated a keen understanding of the interconnectedness between tourism, economic growth, cultural preservation, and technological advancement.
