Esfahak is a remarkable desert village located in Tabas County, South Khorasan Province, northeastern Iran, characterized by its 1,000-year-old clay architecture. Following the devastating earthquake in 1978, which severely damaged the village and discouraged its residents, a transformative journey began. In 2008, a group of young villagers collaborated with research institutions to restore Esfahak, leading to its recognition as a national tourist destination. The village’s recovery became a model for communities affected by natural disasters, showcasing how tourism can be leveraged for economic and social benefits.

Revitalization of Heritage
The earthquake of 1978 destroyed much of Esfahak, but after decades, descendants of the victims began revitalizing their ancestors’ homes into rural residences. They established a clay workshop, applying principles of sustainable architecture to preserve their cultural heritage. This effort earned Esfahak the Asian Architecture Award in 2017, solidifying its status as a notable tourist destination.
-
Hope Tours and Community Development
In an inspiring move, the youth of Esfahak initiated Hope Tours to promote resilience and hope among earthquake-affected communities across Iran. By forming cooperatives and focusing on tourism, they transformed the village into a hub for scientific research, including a seismological center capable of predicting natural hazards. Their dedication led to the village winning the TO DO Award in Germany in 2020, recognizing their innovative approach to recovery and community empowerment.

Astronomy Tourism
Esfahak boasts a pristine dark sky, making it an ideal location for astronomy tourism. The village management, under the guidance of its youth, implemented regulations to minimize light pollution, enhancing the stargazing experience.
