Higueras is located in the northeast of the state of Nuevo León in the Coastal Plain region of the Gulf, 56 kilometers from the city of Monterrey. The Municipality of Higueras is known as the oregano capital, as it is the main producer in the country. Oregano holds a crucial role in the cuisine of Northeastern Mexico and has been incorporated as a key feature in the tourist offerings of Higueras. 

Every year during Holy Week, the Annual Oregano Fair is held, where residents and tourists gather to celebrate various religious and cultural activities. The fair is held in honour of the oregano gatherers of the Sierra de Picachos. 

Within Higueras lies the Sierra de Picachos. Given its ecological significance, it has been declared a State Natural Protected Area, a Priority Terrestrial Region, and an Area of Importance for Bird Conservation. The Sierra de Picachos is also the birthplace of the main water source of the state of Nuevo León, making its management and conservation a priority for Higueras. 

The village has embraced the development of rural tourism as an economic alternative for its population. Part of this development has involved creating tourist routes that highlight the natural and cultural beauty of Higueras, promoting products that incorporate rural activities such as goat’s milk cheese-making, wine production, and oregano harvesting.
