In the north of the Valencian Community, 1000 meters above sea level, Morella stands within an area of more than 400km2, of which more than 78% are protected as part of the Natura 2000 Network. Here we find areas of special protection for birds, places of community interest such as rivers, micro-reserves or the Natural Park of Pereroles.

Morella is keeper of priceless pieces of history; it is surrounded by almost 2 kilometres of wall and is crowned by an imposing castle, both classified as National Monuments and whose location also gives them the peculiarity of a spectacular landscape. The monumental castle has a Master Plan drawn up by the Ministry of Culture, while the municipality grants an annual budget and receives investment from the Spanish administration. In recent years, important interventions were performed such as the rehabilitation of the Apostles’ Gate or the ongoing project for the Parador Nacional hotel.

Its rich heritage allows to present an attractive and varied offer, from paleontological sites of great importance, such as Levantine cave paintings and dry-stone constructions, both World Heritage Sites, to the Visigoth town, very attractive rural centres, historic farmhouses with medieval remains, hermitages or cattle trails. Of all of them, 41 have a Spanish protection distinction called BIC (Asset of Cultural Interest) and 29 Assets of Local Relevance.

The management of this cultural heritage has received European recognition with two Europa Nostra awards. In addition, the Spanish World Heritage cities awarded the municipality the 2011 Heritage Award for its management. There are various festivals and cultural expressions that also enjoy national recognition.

A management based on proximity has been essential to develop initiatives and rehabilitation projects and teach the importance of heritage to inhabitants and visitors. Thanks to the council’s agreement with the Spanish government, the municipality is responsible for the castle and walls, thus promoting rehabilitation projects and visits to the monuments themselves, while creating employment.
