Omitlán de Juárez, situated in the state of Hidalgo, Mexico, is a picturesque village steeped in rich history and culture. It is part of the Comarca Minera Geopark, a designation bestowed by UNESCO. The Geopark has a management structure designed to ensure citizen participation, represented by ejidal (communal land) organization bodies. 

The village is located in an idyllic area, preserving a warm rural aura and is surrounded by forests and mountains, offering ample opportunities for outdoor activities in rural landscapes. 

One of Omitlán’s many strengths lies in its people. The local population has taken it upon themselves to preserve the culture and traditions for generations, bringing forth customs and practices that are reflected in the daily life of the community and also in the village’s tourist products. 

Through community’s efforts, driven by a desire to conserve and promote Omitlán’s culture,  activities like hikes, tours, and experiences visiting various tourist spots in nearby communities have been organized thereby involving local residents in the process. 

In Omitlán de Juárez, strategies that promote the local economy have been prioritized. A tourist bus has been implemented, strategically distributing the points of visit throughout the village. Local product fairs are encouraged, and the administration also seeks to periodically participate in fairs outside the village to introduce local products to new markets.

The “Saying Alley”

The “Callejón del Dicho” or “Saying Alley” is an initiative carried out by the municipality of Omitlán de Juárez. This alley portrays images of cultural folklore characters and highlights local sayings as a way to document, promote, and value this intangible heritage. The 176 colloquial expressions, uniquely witty and charming, are accompanied by elements of Omitlán culture, depicted across an area of  200m² with a palette of more than 165 colors and also covered by colorful umbrellas.

Education targeted at vulnerable groups

Through the Hidalguense Institute for Education, campaigns for adult literacy are conducted in the village. Additionally, in collaboration with the Institute for Training in the State of Hidalgo, training programs have been designed focusing on development and aimed at vulnerable groups. The objective of these programs is to provide these groups with equal opportunities in the workplace, bridge educational gaps, and promote better coexistence amongst families.

A Flavorful Village

Omitlán de Juárez holds the designation of “Pueblo con Sabor” or “A Flavorful Village” an emblem granted by the state of Hidalgo to villages with significant gastronomic representation. For the preparation of dishes, they use regionally produced ingredients, harvested by the hands of the village’s residents. Additionally, the “Annual Cahuiche Gastronomic Festival” takes place on the third Sunday of November. The event includes a gastronomic competition that brings together all traditional gatherers, cooks and culinary schools.
