Penglipuran Village is a traditional Balinese village located in the Kubu Subdistrict, Bangli Regency of Bali, Indonesia. The village has earned recognition for its commitment to maintaining traditional architecture, customs and way of life. The community has implemented various measures to preserve its cultural heritage while embracing responsible tourism practices.  

 These efforts aim to strike a balance between allowing visitors to experience and appreciate the unique village culture and ensuring the well-being of the local community and environment. In an era of rapid urbanization and globalization they are learning how to balance modern development whilst preserving the essence of Penglipuran’s traditional values and customs. 

 But Penglipuran’s commitment to authenticity goes beyond its enchanting environemtn; it extends to its people. The village has cultivated a network of homegrown guides, locals who share their rich knowledge and captivating tales with visitors. This holistic approach not only bolsters the community’s economic well-being but also opens doors to genuine and immersive experiences for tourists.

Environmental sustainability is actively promoted and preserved through various ways including waste management, conservation of natural resources, sustainable tourism, education and awareness.  

 The village is known for its well-preserved traditional Balinese architecture and has adopted measures to maintain the authenticity of its buildings and houses. Such preservation efforts allows visitors to experience the unique architectural style and appreciate the cultural heritage of the village. It follows a unique architectural layout with all the houses aligned in a row, separated by a narrow street. This specific design emphasizes community values and the collective spirit of the village.

St. Anton recognizes the significance of connectivity, not just within its borders but on an international scale. The creation of the Stanzertal Cycle Path, a 14km connection from Landeck to St. Anton with proposed extensions, highlights the village’s commitment to sustainable mobility. This cycling initiative aims to provide an alternative, traffic-calmed route, fostering not only local mobility but also boosting summer tourism. The emphasis on accessibility extends to the international railway station, wheelchair-friendly public transport, and inclusive facilities, making St. Anton a destination that welcomes visitors from various corners of the globe.

Cultural Tapestry and Heritage and Preservation

St. Anton prides itself on a rich cultural tapestry woven through its own dialect, longstanding traditions, and UNESCO intangible heritages such as the “Karfreitagsratschen” ritual. The village actively promotes both old and new customs, supporting 33 associations that contribute to the annual St. Anton Village Festival and the Arlberg Culture Days that celebrate both old and new customs.
