San Cosme y Damián is located in the south of the Department of Itapúa, 333 kilometres from the city of Asunción, on the banks of the Paraná River, with approximately 10,454 inhabitants. The district of San Cosme y Damián is where the architectural remains of the most important Jesuit Reductions in Paraguay can be found. Among its attractions, there is also the Astronomical Interpretation Centre or Planetarium called Buenaventura Suárez.

Agriculture, cattle raising and fishing are the activities of a town that today makes tourism the main economic engine of the town.

The district is part of two tourist routes, the Jesuit Route and the Yerba Mate Route, the latter based especially on agricultural activities. Due to its location on the banks of the Paraná River, fishing is also one of its main activities. Thus, there is an Association of Riverbank Fishermen and every year the Fish Festival is held.

The town’s vision of the contribution of tourism to rural development is reflected in the commitment of the villagers to this sector. A successful case in this town is the Posadas Turísticas, family houses where, apart from lodging, the visitor can live the experience of being in the bosom of a typical Paraguayan family, eating traditional meals and food made with vegetables produced by the owners in their organic gardens: “from the garden to the plate”. There are currently 15 such establishments in the village. Due to the interest of the inhabitants in the development of tourism, several associations have been formed, such as the Association of Tourist Service Providers, Inns and Restaurants, the Association for the Promotion and Development of Ecological and Adventure Tourism and the Association of Fairgrounds, all of which aim to strengthen tourism in the community of San Cosme y Damián.

Its crystalline waters, an exuberant natural landscape, its vast history, religion, science, astronomy, culture and unparalleled experiences, all come together in this beautiful town that is a must visit in Paraguay to enjoy unique experiences.
