Trà Quế Vegetable Village, located just 3 km north of Hội An Ancient Town in Vietnam, is a remarkable destination steeped in agricultural tradition and cultural heritage. Established over 500 years ago, this village evolved from a fishing community to a thriving agricultural hub known for its unique, high-quality vegetables. Surrounded by the Cổ Cò River and Trà Quế Lagoon, it boasts 202 households cultivating 55 different vegetable varieties across 18 hectares, producing around 800 tons of vegetables annually that meet Vietgap standards.

Preserving Tradition: A Cultural Heritage Recognized

In April 2022, Trà Quế was officially recognized as a National Intangible Cultural Heritage by Vietnam’s Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism. This accolade underscores the village’s commitment to traditional farming methods, which include using only seaweed from Trà Quế Lagoon and organic fertilizers, while strictly avoiding mechanization and chemical pesticides. The community also actively preserves traditional festivals, beliefs, and historical sites, enhancing the village’s cultural significance and making it an ideal destination for cultural tourism.

Empowering the Community Tourism

Community tourism activities in Trà Quế have become a vital source of income for the local population. With 326 workers directly involved in vegetable cultivation and tourism services, initiatives like farm visits, cooking classes, and homestays have created jobs and boosted incomes. Infrastructure improvements and the preservation of traditional festivals not only enhance the village’s appeal but also elevate the quality of life for residents, promoting a sustainable and vibrant community.

Trà Quế is committed to sustainable tourism that emphasizes environmental protection and green consumption trends. The village’s organic vegetable products cater to health-conscious consumers, particularly tourists seeking safe and nutritious options. Collaborating with the Swiss Tourism for Sustainable Development Project (ST4SD), Trà Quế is implementing initiatives to alleviate overcrowding at popular attractions while providing visitors with unique, sustainable experiences. Furthermore, QR-code technology is being utilized to offer tourists detailed information about the village’s history, culture, and attractions, enhancing their overall experience and supporting digital transformation in tourism.
