Experience a Living Legacy in Giriloyo Batik Village
Wukirsari’s famed Batik Tulis (hand-drawn batik) traces back to the Islamic Mataram Kingdom. Sultan Agung Hanyokrokusumo commissioned the Mataram Kings’ Mausoleum on Merak Hill in 1634, inspiring artisans to develop this intricate art form. Visitors can immerse themselves in hands-on batik workshops in Giriloyo Batik Village, gaining a deeper appreciation of this UNESCO-recognized craft, which has been preserved across generations. By actively promoting batik-making as a cultural tourism experience, Wukirsari fosters pride and participation within the community.
-
A Zero-Waste Movement
Wukirsari has become a model for sustainable tourism with its “Becik Resik Karangkulon” initiative, which promotes waste management and zero-plastic policies. Local markets like Sor Jati and Jolontoro showcase traditional values by using leaves and natural wrappers, avoiding plastic. The village also emphasizes water conservation and biodiversity protection to maintain its beautiful natural environment.
