Established over 1,400 years ago, Xitou is a tranquil haven nestled within Qianjiangyuan-Baishanzu National Park in Zhejiang, China. Renowned for its pristine ecology, with 92% forest coverage and remarkable air and water quality, Xitou is home to more than 1,270 living species, including the rare black muntjac and giant salamander. The village’s dedication to preserving its natural and cultural heritage is exemplified by its traditional firing technique for Longquan celadon, which was recognized by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2009. This artistry not only symbolizes Chinese cultural heritage but also serves as a centerpiece for the village’s eco-tourism initiatives.

Revitalizing Culture Through Innovation in Tourism

Xitou Village has embraced innovative cultural events to drive rural tourism, such as the “Everlasting Kiln Fire,” which showcases the traditional firing technology of Longquan celadon. The village also hosts the International Biennial of Bamboo Architecture and the National Village Spring Festival Fair. These activities attract a younger generation and heritage inheritors back to the village, enriching the visitor experience and enhancing local cultural confidence. The vibrant tourism scene has engaged over 70% of villagers in tourism-related activities, with a significant number of women and young entrepreneurs leading the charge.

Fostering Collaboration for Community Growth

To ensure the benefits of tourism development reach every villager, Xitou has established the Alliance for Rural Tourism Development. This collaborative initiative invites all community members to participate, fostering shared resources and localized tourism programs with 22 neighboring villages. Since the alliance’s inception, Xitou and its partners have welcomed over 200,000 visitors annually, significantly contributing to regional tourism growth and the vitality of rural communities.
