A picturesque lakeside village

Zell am See is a town in the Austrian Alps with 10,131 inhabitants. Located in Salzburg county, surrounded by beautiful mountains, the town is famous for skiing in winter and hiking and biking during summertime. The beautiful lake offers a variety of activities such as swimming, boating, stand up paddle boarding, fishing or just cooling down on hot summer days. The goal is to continuously improve the offerings in the region for both locals and visitors.

The Hohe Tauern National Park is one of the most spectacular high mountain landscapes on planet Earth. This is home to many plants and wildlife species unique to this ecosystem.

With a local guide, visitors can take a digital city tour of Zell am See. There are ten stations to visit, where interesting and historical places can be explored, and stories are told by local and well-known personalities. The village also hosts various events such as the “Zell am See Town Market”, where regional food from regional producers is available.

The mountain Schmittenhöhe is not only popular for its skiing in winter, but also its summer touristic attractions including the summer cable cars. The village has unveiled an art project on the mountain Schmittenhöhe. This is Austria’s first “Art and Culture” mountain and thus, Europe’s biggest exhibition area.

HIGHLIGHTS

-

Climate and energy

Through an intensive programme called Klima und Energie Modell Region (KEM), over a period of three years, the village implemented 11 measures to support sustainability in the region. The result is a reduction in carbon dioxide and a new sustainable means of transport, micro mobility and decreases in traffic levels. Only 2 regions in Austria are KEM certified regions.

This KEM village is supporting the accommodation providers to become certified with the European Eco-Label. Thus, it is focusing on waste reduction, more solar panels and food production, which can only be bought from local retailers. These actions support local businesses as well as the community.

The first fully electrified ski bus was introduced in 2021 and, naturally, the bus only operates using sustainable electricity.

-

Green events

The village has teamed up with Ferry Porsche Congress Center (FPCC) to hold events in Zell am See-Kaprun, which aim to uphold high ecological principles in order to conserve natural resources and to optimise energy efficiency and regional value creation.

In 2013, the FPCC was awarded the Austrian Eco-label. The eco-label for “Green Meetings” and “Green Events” is awarded to organisers who go to great lengths in reducing various amounts of waste – both at conferences and across a wide range of events.

Matching supply and demand in employment

The village has implemented its own website which advertises job postings listed in the Zell am See-Kaprun region section. The Team4U Project includes 75 hotels, 14 inns, 10 B&Bs, 15 aparthotels, 39 bars, 24 cafés, 81 restaurants, 47 mountain and ski huts and 390 other businesses. The employers of such establishments carry out regular recruitment campaigns to attract   motivated team members.
