Zhagana Village, nestled in the heart of China’s Gansu Province, is situated amidst stunning glacial landforms. The village is nestled within a landscape boasting ice ditches, U-shaped valleys, sheepback rocks, whaleback rocks, and glacial lakes, sculpted by glacial erosion.

Cultural and Natural Heritage Preservation

Zhagana Village is committed to safeguarding its rich cultural and natural heritage. This includes the preservation of ancient architecture, such as century-old houses and the “Old Residence of J.F. Rock.” The village also hosts traditional folk festivals and celebrations like the Xianglang Festival, showcasing its cultural diversity. Zhagana Village boasts a thriving handicraft industry. Local artisans create leather goods, wool spinning products, wooden crafts, copperware, and tents. These products not only support the local economy but also serve as examples of sustainable, locally sourced craftsmanship.

Thriving Homestay Industry

Zhagana leverages its rich natural and cultural resources, supported by local government policies that have garnered county and state-level efforts to boost rural tourism. Since 2015, an investment of ¥540 million ($75.46 million) has transformed the village with upgraded infrastructure, including visitor centres, roads, walking trails, wooden walkways, tourist facilities, and parking areas. Over 230 operational homestay units are now available welcome visitors. Zhagana actively integrates clean energy sources, particularly solar power, to minimise its ecological footprint and protect the local environment.
