For Plateliai, a Best Tourism Village recognized in 2025, in Lithuania, and Bled, recognized in 2025 as a Best Tourism Village in Slovenia, the connection began with nature. Both villages are shaped by iconic lakes, surrounded by protected landscapes and united by the belief that tourism should preserve local identity while creating opportunities for local communities.
Although separated by more than a thousand kilometres, the two destinations discovered they shared much more than beautiful scenery. Through the UN Tourism Best Tourism Villages Network, they found common values, similar challenges and, most importantly, an opportunity to learn from one another.
What began as a conversation in October 2025 during the Best Tourism Villages by UN Tourism Ceremony in China soon evolved into something even more meaningful. Inspired by this first meeting, Plung\u0117 Tourism Information Centre invited a representative of the Bled Tourism Board to Lithuania, turning an initial connection into an opportunity for genuine collaboration.
The visit took place during the international conference SHIFT: Tourism Trends and Directions, held in Plateliai on 19 June 2026. The conference brought together tourism professionals, destination managers, municipal representatives, international partners, representatives of Lithuania Travel and the Ministry of the Economy and Innovation of the Republic of Lithuania to exchange ideas on the future of sustainable tourism and the role of international cooperation in strengthening rural destinations.
As part of the conference programme, the representative from Bled introduced the destination, shared its experience as a UN Tourism Best Tourism Village, and reflected on the opportunities and challenges of managing tourism in one of Slovenia’s most recognised destinations. The exchange of experiences encouraged valuable discussions and demonstrated how villages with different histories often face similar challenges.
Beyond the conference, the representative from Bled explored Plateliai and its unique attractions, including \u017demaitija National Park, the Cold War Museum and Lake Plateliai. The visit also provided an opportunity to meet local artisans and producers, experience Samogitian traditions, visit educational spaces and discover how community involvement shapes tourism in the destination.
For Plateliai, welcoming the visit carried special meaning – not only as hosts, but also as representatives of Lithuania within the Best Tourism Villages Network.

“Visiting Plateliai was a genuinely inspiring experience \u2014 a destination where nature, community and tradition are deeply intertwined. What began as a chance encounter at the Best Tourism Villages Award Ceremony in Huzhou, Zhejiang Province, China has grown into a real professional partnership, built on the exchange of knowledge and practices in destination management. By the end of the visit, representatives of Plateliai and Bled agreed to continue sharing good practices, exchanging knowledge and exploring future initiatives that support sustainable rural tourism.
Their story shows that the greatest strength of the UN Tourism Best Tourism Villages Network lies not only in recognising outstanding destinations, but in creating lasting connections between people and communities. Those connections encourage villages to exchange ideas, inspire one another and work together towards a shared goal: ensuring that tourism strengthens local communities while protecting the natural and cultural heritage that makes each destination unique.
For Plateliai and Bled, this is only the beginning. Their experience demonstrates that meaningful international partnerships are built through trust, openness and the willingness to learn from one another.<\/p>
